Tolerance

Tolerance can be stated as the ability to endure or accept beliefs or behavior different from our own. It means to live and let others live. Tolerance is an inborn feeling. It is that prudent virtue that enables universal love and peace prevail. Mahatma Gandhi has rightly said , “Intolerance itself is a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.” We can see that there is gross intolerance among people. People of different religions are fighting just because they cannot tolerate each other’s customs as well as traditions. It is like peace and love are banished from this world. Intolerance is the root cause of all problems , at global as well as local level. Terrorism has caused devastation and destruction around the  world and is caused due to religious intolerance. Today , one kills another just for the sake of money or other worldly pleasures. There is no value of human life. Humanity and benevolence have vanished in this modern era. Even if we go down the annals of history , we can mostly see wars and bloodsheds. In ancient times , difference in religion led to prosecution. Thousands were burnt to death just because of religious intolerance. A whole community was massacred in the name of god. Caste difference , Untouchability , Sati Pratha etc promoted intolerance. All these things are result of dogmatism , a belief that only one attitude is right.

Did God want that his children kill in the name of him?Of course not!! Tolerance is the need of the hour. It enables co-existence and we can reach the pinnacle of glory by being tolerant. Tolerance is that root on which the tree of humanity thrives. But it does not mean that we should let other people walk over us. If something wrong is happening , we should raise our voice instead of forbearing it. We should be tolerant if the situation demands as sometimes trivial disputes result in civil wars and riots. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has said that one should be as tolerant as a tree that provides shade even to the wood cutter. Man must understand that intolerance only results in devastation and destruction.

If we continue to be intolerant , we would perish in no time. It is said , “Test of courage comes when you are in minority , but test of tolerance comes when you are in majority.” Resilience is the key to survive. But today anarchism and intolerance have taken an upgrade. So , we should accept each other as the way we are and pardon each others folly. Lets build a utopia where intolerance has no place. Where peace and love prevail. Where aversion and envy do not exist.              Warren Buffet has rightly said , “You will continue to suffer if you have an emotional reaction to everything said to you. True power is sitting back and observing things with logic . True power is restraint. If words control you that means everyone else can control you. Just breathe and allow things to pass.
