POLLUTION- a serious threat

Science and technology have revolutionized the lives of human beings on this planet. They have carved and provided a base of a modern world for the future generations. It has made our lives more comfortable and luxurious but along with this , it has created a monster , which if not tackled immediately , can become a doom for the entire planet and its inhabitants. This monster is none other than pollution.

Today pollution has become an ablaze issue and has been since the last decade. From TV news channels to newspapers , all are preparing their reports with recent updates on pollution to inform their respective viewers. Global Summits and high level meetings are being held to discuss and find solution to this problem as it has already caused peril on Earth. We can witness this as the Glaciers are melting , sea levels are rising , Ozone layer is breaking , Amazon are burning etc. Pollution is not of one type. It is a multiheaded monster as if you cut one head , another one crops up. Therefore , we need to fight all its forms to weaken its grip. Its forms are-

1 SOIL POLLUTION- It is defined as the contamination of soil due to toxic compounds , radio-active materials , plastic , chemicals etc. Herbicides and pesticides used in agriculture are the primary cause of soil pollution. Plastic does not decompose and thus pollutes the soil. This has resulted in soil erosion , desertification , land degradation etc. Defforestation has also contributed in the conversion of nutrient rich land into wasteland. Land is very important for us as it is our habitat and also yields food for us. Thus we all must contribute in saving our habitat.

2 WATER POLLUTION- It can be defined as the pollution of water largely due to human activities. Humans use water for drinking and performing household chores but the wastewater is dumped back without any treatment into the water bodies resulting in pollution. Industrial waste and domestic sewage is dumped into the rivers poisoning the marine life. Oil spills from the cargo ships , cattle bathing , fertilizers , all pollute water. Due to these activities , the Ganges dolphin is already on the line of extinction. According to a study , potable water on our blue planet might finish by 2050 if not acted accordingly. Thus , the governments and citizens of this planet must act swiftly to prevent this catastrophe.

3 AIR POLLUTION- Air pollution occurs when unwanted substances and gases enter Earth’s atmosphere like CO , CFC etc. Air pollution has become a serious threat that we face today. Air is a cocktail of gases. All living beings need air for survival. Our atmosphere is like a blanket that contains all the gases but due to industrial and household emissions , this atmosphere is getting contaminated. The green house effect has caused Global Warming which has resulted in melting of polar ice caps , Ozone hole etc. Gases like CO when enter our human body , form carboxy haemoglobin which causes death. In India , during the Diwali season , there are a lot of emissions air polluting compounds. This yer only , the air in the National Capitol entered the hazardous category , forcing the government to declare holiday in schools till November 5. Therefore it is an urgent need to solve this problem as it threatens life on this planet.

3 NOISE POLLUTION- Bursting of crackers , blaring horns or any kind of intense sound causes noise pollution. It disturbs sleep and takes away the peace of mind. High decibel level forces brain to press panic button , putting more pressure on heart leading to high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems. It increases stress , causes dizziness , hypertension , ulcers , abortion , disorientation , memory impairment or even temporary or permanent deafness. When noise level crosses 70 decibels , we enter the danger zone. So , by taking steps to reduce noise pollution , we can overcome this menace.

  • Plastic is a lethal material as it contains high density of polythene. 54% of it has cancer causing substances and 16% is chlorine. When thrown in sea , it affects marine life , when thrown in soil , it does not decompose and when burnt , produces harmful gases. If eaten by animals , it chokes their digestive tract ultimately causing death. Eatables are also poisoned by it which can cause Kidney failure and bone abnormality. Its pigment in dyes is carcinogenic. So , lets say no to plastic and do not invite death to our house. We must Ban plastic from our house

Therefore we must act now to save our planet for the future generations. We should gift them clean-green environment rather than a polluted one. Environment activists like Greta Thunberg have spoken out against the world governments on their handling of such a delicate matter at the UN and other Global Summits. Now a days , campaigns are taking charge against the climate change. Many including students have protested across the world appealing to those in power to address this issue. It is not only their duty but also ours to act on small levels unitedly to save our Mother Earth.
