After an action packed summer , with Italy and Argentina coming on top of their respective competitions , the players return from their international duty to commence their respective club campaign for the next season. But Before all the sporting action , we have the transfer window in which clubs across the world try signing new players for the next season. It means we have a whole bunch of players who come into their new clubs with the hunger to prove themselves.
This summer transfer window has been the one for the ages with a lot of superstar activity across the world. This transfer window managed to gain attention of the whole world with some crazy deals as well as rumours. Despite the financial effects of Covid-19 , almost every big club making a big money signing as plenty of minds were blown and records broken. Now lets look at some of the big money deals that shocked the world.
MIRALEM PJANIC
During the transfer window , one thing became clear that Barcelona are not in the best of financial conditions. The ex-Juve midfielder who arrived last year only in exchange for Arthur , had to be shipped out as his salary was too much for the club in it’s financial crisis. Thus , he was forced to move on a loan to Besiktas who made the most of this situation.
The move however is not as bad as it seems with Barcelona getting rid of an ageing squad member and clearing a large chunk of salary as well. The player , who had fallen out with the coach , had already decided to move clubs prior to the transfer window. Nonetheless , he is still a quality player and will be useful for the reigning Turkish champions.
ANTOINE GRIEZMANN
One of the worst deals ever in history of football. Barca signed Griezmann from their league rivals Atletico Madrid in 2019 for a hefty sum of $140 million. Fast Forward to 2 seasons , Griezemann returns back to Atleti on a loan move as he failed to impress at the Catalan club. During this time , Atletico won the league and Barcelona suffered humiliations failing to win a major trophy except the Copa del Rey.
CRISTIANO RONALDO
Who saw that coming? Cristiano Ronaldo returns to the Old Trafford after 12 years at the age of 36. The last days of August saw some crazy rumours out of Turin linking him with Manchester City , arch rivals of Manchester United. In the end , Ronaldo returned where it all started for a romantic re-union , something that looks straight out as a movie plot.
LIONEL MESSI
After 17 years , Leo Messi has finally changed clubs or you can say forced to change clubs. Having returned after finally winning an international trophy , the Barca Captain was informed about a shocking news by the club that the club could no longer pay his wages. The news broke the internet as PSG swiftly signed the Argentine on a free after an emotional farewell. Signing probably the greatest player to kick the football on a free , Barca took a massive L there as the French Clubs chances of winning the Champions League have taken a massive boost.
RAPHAEL VARANE
With Sergio Ramos leaving Madrid , his centre back partner also decided to change clubs. Varane decided to move to the Premier League and it was Man United whom he chose. United required a Defender alongside Maguire and have landed themselves one of the best Defenders of the World. Varane , who is only 28 , is a serial winner as he has already won 4 UCL Trophies and a World Cup with France. With Cristiano Ronaldo by his side once again , it will be interesting to see if they can win some trophies together for United.
SERGIO RAMOS
At the age of 35 , the Madrid Captain was forced out of the club as Real Madrid did not want to give him the contract he wanted. PSG were quick to offer him the contract and were able to sign the legendary defender. With his quality at the back , it is expected for PSG to challenge for the Champions League.
JADON SANCHO
Sancho had been a transfer target for United since last Summer and were finally able to sign him after a Transfer Saga last summer. At Dortmund , Sancho became one of the best Wingers in the world only at the age of 21. With plenty of Attacking plethora amongst their Ranks , Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team will be the one to watch next season.
ROMELU LUKAKU
At Inter Milan , Lukaku became one of the best strikers in the world after a not so impressive start in the Premier League. But now he is a much better player as Chelsea took advantage of Inter’s poor financial condition. The reigning Champions of Europe who had just bought Timo Werner last season wanted to sign Erling Haaland but he wouldn’t leave till next season. But nonetheless with a World Class striker like Lukaku , you can expect goals next season.
JACK GREALISH
Jack Grealish. became the most expensive English Player ever as Man City decided to go big on their new No.10 . Grealish came from the youth ranks of Aston Villa and made a name of himself in the Premier League. But did City , who have plenty of attacking talent really needed him? It is a lot of money spent for a player who occupies similar position as Kevin de Bruyne , Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva. Grealish is still a quality player who can take City to their much desired UCL Trophy under Pep Guardiola.
ACHRAF HAKIMI
Hakimi was another star player to leave Inter Milan. After winning the Scudetto , Inter were forced to sell players due to their Financial condition and PSG decided to spend big on the 22 year old Moroccan international. He will definitely be a top quality right back for the Parisian’s , a position of concern before his arrival.
DAYUT UPAMECANO
Upamecano is one of the most exciting young talent across Europe. With many clubs interested in the young frenchman , Bayern edged themselves ahead as they directly paid his release clause to RB Leipzig. He would be a great addition to their squad with Alaba and Boateng departing Bayern during the same transfer window.
GIANLUIGI DONNARUMA
PSG have had a great transfer window and have gone on to sign the best young goalkeeper in the world. The Euro Player of the tournament signed for PSG on a free amid interest from every club in Europe after his contract with AC Milan expired. The Italian will surely be their No.1 choice for the next decade.
SERGIO AGUERO
Aguero has established himself as one of the best strikers of this decade at Man City. At the age of 32, he decided to leave City on a free and joined Barcelona after a season of injury struggles. Barca hope that he replicates the success of Luis Suarez but with the unexpected departure of his friend Lionel Messi , it would be interesting to see how he can fill his boots.
DAVID ALABA
Madrid have signed a world class player who can play at many positions on a free. With departure of Varane and Ramos , David Alaba is the perfect replacement. The 28 year old left Bayern after a very successful career for the Bavarians looking for a new challenge and it was Madrid whom he chose.
MEMPHIS DEPAY
Depay has had a peculiar career as he failed at United but brought out is best at Lyon. However a reunion with manager Ronald Koeman could be beneficial for Barcelona. It would be interesting to see how he fares out at the Camp Nou.
WINNERS: PSG AND MAN UNITED
United would feel that they did all they could during this transfer window. From signing Cristiano Ronaldo to Raphael Varane , they ticked all the boxes except signing a defensive midfielder. However they would be happy with what transpired.
PSG on the other hand had a dream Transfer Window. The Parisian’s have assembled a team full of superstars which now everyone expects to go all the way and win the most coveted Trophy this season.
LOSERS: BARCELONA
Despite quite a few signings , Barcelona are the biggest losers of this years transfer window. Losing Lionel Messi can be the only reason to come into this category. However losing Antoine Griezmann in the same transfer window to Atletico Madrid is salt to the wounds of the Barcelona fans.
