Value education is rooted in Indian philosophy and culture and ingrained in every tradition of Indian culture. Values are a set of qualities that play a pivotal role in shaping our career. They reflect our family background and our personality. They are the guiding principles of life. But , It has been observed that there is an erosion of social and moral values of system. The youth of today are not able to understand the importance of values. They indulge in anti-social activities and many of them are becoming junkies. Working parents are unable to give time to their children and hence are not able to impart values. Children adhere to the violence shown on T.V. and they become rebellious and obtrusive. They are becoming juvenile delinquents. They are unable to understand that values are a vehicle of knowledge. Since July 1997 ,Maharashtra Government has introduced ‘Paripath’ for instilling values in children in all schools but the expected results were not visualized. The youngsters are only considered about success and fame but what will they gain if they acquire the riches but lose their whole soul. This is the time to make or break. If values are shunned one can never achieve the ultimate goal. Like in other countries , value education should be imparted till high school. Parents should devote their time to their children and should always keep in touch with them. Teachers should council the students instead of giving corporal punishment. These steps must be taken to inculcate values like love , empathy etc in the youth to save their career. One must try to accept the values in order to lead a better life. It is rightly said,
“VALUES ARE CAUGHT , NOT TAUGHT”
