FEMALE FOETICIDE

Since ancient times , women in the Indian Society are considered as a curse for their family as well as the society. Female foeticide is the abortion of the female foetus after 18 weeks of gestation from mother uterus just because the child is female. People think boys are the key to continue their family lineage. The advancement of ultrasound technology came to India in 1979 but its spread was slow. But by 2000’s it was widespread. In India , due to sex determination tests , about 10 million female foetus have been killed just because they were girls. The important reason of female foeticide is the preference of male child over the girl child as son is the main source of income whereas girls are considered consumers. Son is considered as a family asset but a daughter is a liability. There is a misconception in the society that boys look after their parents when they become old and girls are  to leave them. Old custom of the dowry system in India puts up a big challenge before the parents and is the main reason to avoid girl child. The insecurity of the girls and her low status in the society is also a matter of great concern. Since 1991 , 80% of districts in India have recorded a declining sex ratio with Punjab being the worst. Jat boys from Haryana travelled 3000 km to find a bride. Kerala has the highest female sex ratio in India while Haryana has the the lowest. Child sex ration has also faced a downfall. There are 927 girls for every 1000 boys in India. But this social evil has turned into a Rs 1000 crore industry that is about $244 million. Medical officers practice sex determination test secretly and charge heavy amounts of money. Satyamev Jayte . one of the most famous T.V. programme in India run by Aamir Khan has also risen awareness among the masses. The Government of India has banned sex determination tests to avoid this evil practice and to remove this stigma from the society. There is a heavy fine and punishment if one is found practicing it. Till May 2006 , 22 states of India have not reported any such case. People are becoming aware and are empowering the women. For the development of the nation , women must contribute in their respective fields. Saina Nehwal , P.V. Sindhu , Mithali Raj , Sania Mirza , Nirmala Sithavaran , Kalpana Chawla etc have bravely fought against the social evils and are the pride of the nation. These role models have proved that girls are no less than boys. It is rightly said that there is no limit to which a women cannot accomplish.
